MY PROFESSIONAL CURSUS

As I always had a preference for scientific research, I followed biology courses and prepared a Master in Cell Physiology & Biology, as soon as I successfully passed my Baccalaureat. However, there was so many difficulties to find a job in my region, PACA (Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur) with such cursus that I turned to documentation courses before the last exams.

After my DUT (Diplome Universitaire Technologique) in Documentation, which is a very practical formation, I worked 6 months in Paris for a enterprise producing diet food without gluten which needed to set up a computerized database based on FILEFORCE software, for its clientele management .

Then I joined the CIRAD (International Research Center for Agricultural Development) in Montpellier for 2 years and half, as Assistant Documentalist. I learned to work with TEXTO, participated to the indexation team, and helped in the preparation of conferences. I also made researches for the scientists of the department, mostly in english.

I moved to become Documentalist in the network of the CCI (Chambers of Commerce & Industry) . I settled in the CRCI Auvergne, in Clermont-Ferrand, where I set up the Documentation Center for the R & D and Patents department, and lead the regional documentation network of the CCI (5) during 2 years.

As my personal life brought me in Mauritius , I decided to follow the DILS (Diploma in Information & Library Studies) of the University of Mauritius , because my DUT was not recognized there. This allowed me to perfect my english, which is my third language after german, mostly in technical vocabulary. This course was easier than the french cursus I had made, as it was purely theoretical.

Six months before the end of the DILS, I was approached by a College, and I selected "Comparison of french and mauritian library school services as basis for the set up of a Centre of Information & Documentation in the College de la Confiance as subject for my dissertation. This has been the basis of the effective creation of a CDI in this college from the construction plan to the set up of services : I was selected and obtained the job at the end of my courses.

Now, I am there, managing this CDI. I have introduced computerized management and online catalog. Now I am trying to develop its services through organization of educational visits (project to visit the newly set up National Library in August 2001) and expositions (project : exposition about drugs in Mauritius with talks from members of an ONG, of the ADSU (police), of a doctor, in September or October 2001).

I also try, with another school library officer to develop a network within the private confessional school, but this is difficult as team work and conditions to work in network are inexistant. However, I hope that the introduction of Internet in school library will help a lot.
I also have been asked to ensure music courses for children of Form I and II.

As I was interested to go further in Information & Library Studies, I applied for the University of Mauritius- CSU joint award as soon as it was proposed. I was selected with 36 other students who had their DILS, and I am now in the last year of this course which will end in November 2001.

This joint award has been set up to form the professional personnel of the National Library of Mauritius which will settle near the University in approximately 2 years.
