The story of the College de la Confiance

It all started at the beginning of February 1965 when Brother Aloysius O'Brien and Mgr Liston, Bishop of Port-Louis found it necessary to open a new school to meet the needs of the Catholics. They decided that the new school would be mostly oriented towards technical studies while offering all the traditional subjects. The construction was about to start at St Francois Xavier Stadium when a more suitable site of 8 acres, "La propriete de la Confiance" was found at Beau Bassin.

While waiting for the establishment to be completed, the school was temporarily set up at Pere Laval St. in Rose Hill with an intake of 120 students. Brother Remi Carosin was chosen as the first Principal of the College and he was determined to offer a secondary school with a strong vocational and technical bias while providing the usual subjects.
At the beginning of May 1970, College de la Confiance was ready and officially inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Mr Jomadar. The students were given practical courses in horticulture since the beginning and the subject is still compulsory for the students of Form I to Form II.

Since then, the College has developed in many ways. Two modern workshops for woodwork and metalwork were constructed and equipped with funds received from CEBEMO (Holland). When animal husbandry was introduced, suitable buildings were constructed to shelter chickens, ducks, goats and rabbits and the pupils of Form I to Form II were responsible for feeding the animals and for cleaning the shelters. Much developments were also noted in the school yard : many basketball and volleyball playgrounds were added and the football ground was enlarged.

The last Brother to work at the College, Brother Anthony Furniss, left at his official retirement age of 70 on 28 May 1990 after Brother John Cashman who left on 28 April 1993.

In 1991, after reaching the average of 80% pass in the School Certificate examination, it was decided that a Form VI section would be added and the HSC block was inaugurated in 1993.

The College also offers help to less fortunate teenage boys who are not qualified for secondary education by giving them classes in English, French, Mathematics and also woodwork, metalwork, general repairs and gardening.

In 1998, the construction of a new building for the CDI (Center for Documentation and Information) started and it was equipped with computers, encyclopedia and reference books. The CDI was inaugurated the 28 August 1999, and a Library Officer was appointed in September. I was this officer.

In 2001, a music room was equipped and a cybercafe was created in the Computer laboratory to offer the students a wider opening on the world.

Now the College is a modern one and has a population of 900 students, a teaching staff of 43 teachers and a non-teaching staff of 29 persons. The College has got much success and is still successful in sports activities such as athletics or swimming competitions and also in others like debates and drama competitions.

Years have passed since the opening of the College and it has developed. Mr Cyril Leckning, an experienced and far seeing educationalist, said more than 15 years ago :"College de la Confiance will become an outstanding college and the best suited to the needs of Mauritius." And all of us can say that he was right.
